“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you
say I am?”
Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” Luke
9.20
Jesus had asked the disciples who the
crowds said He was. Their replies varied: “Some say John the Baptist; others say
Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to
life.” (v 19) Then He asked them who they thought He was, and the truth
came out – The Christ of God!
Matthew in his gospel has Jesus responding
further to Peter telling him that the declaration he had just made “was
not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven” (Matt. 16.17).
God the Father had revealed to Peter the truth about Jesus the Son. Here was
the long-expected Messiah of the Jews, the Deliverer, and the Saviour of all mankind.
Peter had declared Jesus as the Christ, The
Chosen One of God, but I wonder if he realised the full impact and import of
what it meant.
Similarly I wonder how many believers today
realise, and live in the truth of, just what it means to receive Jesus and to
walk with Him. Here is God Himself – all-powerful, all-knowing, mighty, caring,
enabling, healing, and loving – in the fullness of relationship.
This is what I have. It is freely available
to me. Do I truly realise this? Do I accept it, embrace it, and live powerfully
in the amazing relationship He offers me? I give myself wholly, freely and
willingly to do so. Yet I think the full realisation of who He is and what He
offers me is being revealed, more and more, as I continue to give myself to
journey with Him.
Lord,
Mighty God, Loving Father,
I
come to You. Lead me through this day and all days. Reveal more to me with each
passing moment. Let me realise the immensity of You. Enable me to share you
freely. Amen.
